Community Accountability and Building Alliances: Lawyering Strategies for Working With Communities
Do our civil rights need human rights standards? This workshop will address various issues that law students and attorneys may want to consider when working with and in coalition with community groups. What is the role of lawyers in institutional and social change? What does it mean to be an ally? Who are we ultimately accountable to in our work? How can legal and community organizing strategies integrate with one another? Who protects the human rights of communities? Using a participatory approach, attendees will have the opportunity to engage in power analysis and draw on concrete examples of successful alliances.

Workshop 1-B
Alternative Legal Careers
This workshop will explore careers at law firms that serve the public interest, like labor union and plaintiff's side litigation firms. With the help of the workshop leader, a lawyer at Weinberg, Roger & Rosenfield, participants will learn how to search for satisfying jobs with organizations that often overlooked in on-campus recruiting efforts. Attendees will also work as a group to brainstorm career ideas for those who would like to work outside of an office and serve the community more directly.

Workshop 1-C
Drug Policy
This workshop will include an overview of drug policy, community education, and efforts to influence the legislature. The workshop leader will talk with a small group about drug policy in the country, efforts to change it, and what the current battles are all about. It will be an educational experience for people interested in community education and policy influence surrounding drug policy. In response to the interests of the participants, the workshop will consist primarily of questions and answers with a focus on brainstorming effective strategies for drug policy reform.
